Hangin' out at Hogwart's, Manila Campus

Submitted by K.C. "My boyfriend. Tall, dark, handsome and he spoils me!"

Man the Phillipines have really been representing in my inbox lately. I have a question for Filipinos since now I know you're watching. Did you Filipinos like that Black Eyed Peas song
about Filipinos? PS the only reason I know about this song is because I was watching MTV while visiting my parents because I fell back into teen habits while I was there, not because I'm up on the Black Eyed Peas.

Anyhoo, it seemed like an obvious attempt to capture the under-capitalised-upon Filipino market. But it was in Tagalog so maybe it was saying deep things about Filipino identity that I could never understand and it was secretly awesome. Things like "Filipinos are the best" or "hooray for Filipinos".

Can someone Filipino please explain the significance of this song to you in the comments and lay this mystery to rest once and for all?

p.s. don't leave me hanging

I think 2 of the BEP are from the Philippines.

Bebot in the Philippines is slang for a beautiful girl. Since Apl.De.Ap is Filipino, I think it's a tribute to his roots. He was raised in the Philippines before moving to the US. I think it's pretty sweet. Along with his other songs which commemorate his memories and the things he loves back in the Philippines. :)

Hope that helped you.

I love Bebot! I'm pretty sensitive to pandering, condescent and cheese but I didn't get that from the song.

The first bit narrates Apl.de.ap's childhood in the Philippines and he's like, "life was hard in our small town in the Philippines so I had to go to LA to help my mom but all's cool and I'm proud of my roots (cites food related traditions, including...) so, like, whatevz, plass the glass around, dude, let's drink!"

[NOTE: Filipino culture is big on social boozing. There's rules and stuff. Someone has to play the "dealer" who fills up the communal glass and passes it around. If someone decides to skip a round, the dealer must drink that person's share and keep the ball rolling. THE DRINKING MUST NEVER STOP.

Being the dealer holds some degree of honor especially since it usually means you can hold your drink the most. Being called a drunkard in the Philippines isn't as bad as being called a drunkard here in the west. It's almost a compliment-- if at least a charming, understandable quirk.]

Anyway, the song's refrain goes
"[If] You're Filipino, shout it out, do it!
If you're beautiful, shout it out, do it!
If your life is meaningful- live it!
Thanks for the support!"

I think I got carried away. Been reading your blog for a month now, BTW. In case you think I'm some crazy filipinocentric dude who's like OMGGGGGGGmustcomment! The end.

As for the BEP song.... I can't speak for everyone, but I think the word "bebot" is a bit derogatory. Bebot is a derivative of babe, if I'm not mistaken. Oh well, but it's a pop song celebrating the beauty of the philippines and the filipinas, no real harm in that.

The song is about Alan Pineda aka apl.de.ap's life and he's thanking fellow Filipinos for supporting him. Idk how "bebot" is related to the overall message of the song, because it's slang for girl.

Anyways, I sort of want to send a picture of my English teacher, because he's really, really adorable! But I'm scared he might find out.

Bebot?? That's the Filipino song? I've liked that song forever. I never even noticed it wasn't in English.
BTW this is the best blog eva!! But really, I love cute boys. So it makes sense. Srsly. Whenever I read it I'm all "It's raining men! HALLELUJAH! It's raining men! AMEN!" Those are my exact words.

I don't think that it is offensive but they have a different culture and worst thing it is that we don't ask before doing something, we do it and if they don't like we apologize.
